Elizabeth Lake Nature Preserve Varga
Archeological Site, East Side Entrance

Located at 11000 Lakeview Road in Richmond, this 58 acre site features a one mile nature trail, interpretive signage and educational overlook that allows residents better access to view and appreciate the natural beauty of Elizabeth Lake.             

The natural wetlands that existed on the site were restored and many invasive species were removed. The Natural Areas Inventory identified Lake Elizabeth as the highest quality lake ecosystem remaining in McHenry County. Numerous endangered and threatened plant and animal species utilize the high quality wetland and aquatic communities found within the site. This project was funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Harvard/Boone Trail Phase I

A December 2007 Ground Breaking is planned for the construction of a 1.3 mile asphalt trail that will run from Lawrence Rd. in Harvard, along Ramer Rd. to Maxon Rd. in Chemung. High quality native vegetation exists along both sides of the trail. The project is funded in part by IDNR, IL Bicycle Path Grant Program. The trail is expected to be completed by late summer 2008.
