This 1.5 mile trail takes users from Maxon Road in Chemung, along Ramer Road to Lawrence Road near Milky Way Park in Harvard.
Stone Mill Trail is an additional recreational amenity for local residents to walk, bike or rollerblade, connecting two rural towns, and providing a safe means of travel. Sometime in the future the District hopes to extend the trail 4.5 miles towards the Boone County line to create an even longer route to enjoy.
Historically the trailhead in Chemung was the original site of a saw mill, grist mill and finally rebuilt as a flour mill with origins dating back to 1845. The mill operated for over 50 years and the surrounding community was deeply influenced by the presence of the mill and thus the trail is named accordingly. Historic accounts declared…”In 1873 George Sinderson, who bought the Chemung Mill, was one of the most energetic and enterprising young businessmen in the Township. Each winter he made over 800 barrels of the finest buckwheat around!”
