Mission Statement

To improve the biological health of MCCD lands through the monitoring and inventory of existing wildlife resources, while providing the knowledge and materials to restore native fauna to ecologically damaged lands.

Departmental Overview

     The Wildlife Ecology Section of Natural Resource Management is responsible for a diverse array of projects related to wildlife resources. Wildlife Ecology works closely with every other NRM Section as well as other departments within the larger District, especially the Wildlife Resource Center and Educational Services. Staff includes a Wildlife Ecologist augmented with seasonal assistance through the NRM internship program. The Wildlife Ecology Section is currently housed in the Natural Resource Building at Glacial Park.

Major Areas of Concentration

     The Wildlife Ecology Section is involved in a number of projects that integrate closely with other aspects of departmental work plans and activities. This Section implements critical scientific inventory and monitoring programs related to wildlife District wide. In addition special projects related to wildlife are the sole responsibility of Wildlife Ecology. These include:

  1. Planning and monitoring of biological inventories for breeding birds, herps, freshwater mussels, fish, and butterflies.

  1. Monitoring of all endangered and threatened wildlife resources on District lands.
  1. Planning, implementation and monitoring of the District’s gypsy moth control program.
  1. Planning, implementation, and monitoring of the District’s purple loosestrife biological control program.
  1. Planning, implementation, and monitoring of District wildlife reintroduction programs.
  1. Planning, implementation, and monitoring of the District’s bluebird nest box program.
