Spring 2012 Internships

Native Plant Phenology Project Research Intern
Primary duties include: oversee and implement the first field season of a volunteer-based research project to collect botanical phenology data (i.e., bloom time and seed ripeness data) from 75-100 indicator species across Conservation District sites. Intern will generate native plant identification keys, will provide volunteer training meetings, will make volunteer assignments, and will coordinate volunteers as needed in the field. Once the data is collected, intern will confirm the data’s accuracy and will enter it into a Microsoft Access database. Finally, intern will compare the current data set with a similar 1980s dataset to detect botanical phenology trends. Intern may perform other duties as assigned, such as participating in controlled burns.

Summer 2012 Internships

Environmental Education Intern
Join a team of summer environmental program staff in developing and leading day camps, mini-camps and programs for families with young children. Assist regular staff with public programs, special events and the development of program materials, curriculum and/or displays.

Rare Plant Monitoring Intern
Primary outdoor duties include: rare plant monitoring using established protocols to assess the status of rare, state listed, and federally listed species on District sites. Intern may need to coordinate and supervise volunteers to complete the monitoring. May also assist in: baseline plant surveys, quantitative plant community monitoring, native plant seed collection and processing, seeding projects, and herbarium specimen preparation. Indoor activities may include: completion of paper monitoring forms, data entry, and data analysis.

Research Field Station Interns
Primary duties emphasize field implementation of restoration work in the Midwest, including but not limited to brush removal and herbiciding; exotic weed control; seed collection, processing and planting; wildlife management; and wetland and stream restoration; collection and analysis of biological data, soil/ecosystem surveys, preparation of educational exhibits, acting as a docent for exhibit visitors, and intern-selected independent studies.

Wildlife Resource Center Intern
Assist in the care of the resident raptors, reptiles, feeder colonies, and rehabilitating wildlife species of conservation concern. Assist with the propagation and rearing of turtles. Contribute to environmental education programs and the development of program materials. Assist with cage maintenance and repair. Respond to wildlife related inquiries from the general public.

Summer Seasonal 2012 Employment

Education Department Seasonal Program Leader
The District is currently seeking Seasonal Program Leaders for the 2012 summer season to lead summer environmental education programs, including day camps. Some evening and weekend work is required and scheduling flexibility is a must. Almost all programs are outdoors. Training is included.

GIS Seasonal
The McHenry County Conservation District is currently seeking a seasonal worker to assist the GIS Specialist for 16 weeks with digitizing and entering data into GIS databases and other relevant work duties at Glacial Park starting in early May or June of 2012.

Land and Facilities Seasonal Worker
The McHenry County Conservation District is seeking Seasonal Workers to assist Park Rangers in the daily maintenance of park sites for the 2012 summer season.

Research Field Station Seasonal Technician
The McHenry County Conservation District is currently seeking a seasonal worker to assist the Research Field Station Ecologist with restoration management at Glacial Park and other MCCD properties for the 2012 season starting in May.

Natural Resource Management Seasonal Technician
The McHenry County Conservation District is currently seeking seasonal workers to assist the Natural Resource Management Department with restoration management at various MCCD properties for the 2012 season starting in May.
