Planting for Tomorrow Reforestation Program
Restoring & Preserving Coral Woods Conservation Area

Coral Woods

The Planting for Tomorrow reforestation program will replant 25 acres at Coral Woods Conservation Area, in Marengo.

The Coral Woods Conservation Area is on of the largest remaining wooded areas in McHenry County yet it was once a vast 3,000 acre woodland composed of centuries old red, white and bur oaks interspersed with areas of sugar maples. As settlers moved into the area, the resources that the woods offered become important to the needs of everyday life. Throughout the years, large tracts of land were cleared for lumber, fence posts, and firewood. Cultivation followed logging which created ideal conditions for growing crops and grazing livestock. As a result of over a century and a half of intense land use, Coral Woods has been unable to continue its natural process of regeneration, leaving the future of the woods in jeopardy.

Through your donations and involvement, you are contributing to the greater role of conservation and ensuring that the remaining woods will exist for generations to come. The McHenry County Conservation District is dedicated to preserving, restoring and managing this unique natural area.
